ADVISORY NOTICE

9-1-1 Address Sign and/or House Number Installation Request

The Commissioners’ Court of Sabine County requests the cooperation and assistance of our citizens in adopting standards and specifications for design and installation of address numbers in the unincorporated areas of the County. HELP US HELP YOU.

As the population has been increasing in the unincorporated areas, the volume of emergency calls has been increasing and volunteer fire and rescue personnel and Sheriff’s deputies have experienced increasing difficulty in locating addresses because too often no address markers are in place to identify the properties. This has greatly delayed emergency response. Therefore, it is in the best interest of every citizen to clearly identify their location.

This will also assist the Deep East Texas Council of Governments 9-1-1 Emergency Number System in establishing and maintaining an accurate grid of all addresses.

Each resident is responsible for numbering their structures in a conspicuous manner so that it may be readable from the opposite side of the road. Each address number should be made of durable, reflective and weatherproof material. The numbers should be a minimum of 3 inches in height.

If the home is located too far back from the road for numbers on the front to be easily seen and read at night or if the view is obstructed by trees, plants or other objects, the number should be placed on a plank or post near the driveway approach, no more than 10 feet from the right of way of the road on which the structure is located.  If there is no front driveway, they should be centered on the lot. Display on a postal mail box and post is allowed only when instructed by the United States Post Office. On state maintained roads the Texas Department of Transportation does not allow the reflectors on mail box posts to be covered by the sign.

Residents are encouraged to contact the Sabine County 911 Administration office at (409)-787-3570 for information on signs and to verify their 9-1-1 Address prior to procuring and installing signs and/or house numbers.
